Internship opportunities at Fermilab

Fermilab offers a variety of internship programs for high school, undergraduate and graduate students, secondary school teachers and professionals.

Interns work with experts in science, engineering, computing and operations to support particle physics and accelerator research. Application deadlines, assignment lengths, eligibility requirements and the selection process vary by program.

Training through the U.S. Particle Accelerator School

APS-TD scientists and engineers teach courses at the U.S. Particle Accelerator School, a national graduate-level program that provides training and workforce development in the science and technology of charged particle accelerators and associated systems. USPAS helps prepare students to develop, build and operate particle accelerators for scientific and commercial applications. Participants include undergraduate and graduate students, and experienced scientists and engineers.

DOE-funded traineeships in accelerator science and engineering

To address workforce shortages in critical areas of accelerator science and engineering, the U.S. Department of Energy funds traineeship programs to provide classroom instruction and hands-on research experience for developing the next generation of accelerator scientists and engineers.

Students typically complete two years of university coursework before applying for research opportunities at national laboratories as part of their degree fulfillment. APS-TD scientists and engineers serve as teachers in these programs. Fermilab hosts and welcomes research trainees from all programs funded by DOE.

Current DOE traineeship programs include:
